Jimmy Brown used to be a born again believer. Before touring the world and playing festivals like SXSW and Bonaroo with his band Matrimony, Jimmy was a missionary. Born in Belfast, Jimmy fled the violence and gang life of Northern Ireland finding comfort in the word of God. He slept on the floor of a bakery in Managua, Nicaragua baking bread for children who had nothing. He worked with gangs in South Africa. He traveled to Lombok, Indonesia, the site of a Christian massacre where he met a Muslim leader who changed his perspective on religion.
He emigrated to the United States and met a family that would become the members of his band Matrimony - named for the union of words and music. The band signed to Columbia Records and toured for many years.
And then a period of unthinkable tragedy occurred. Over the course of two years Jimmy lost his sister and his one and a half year old daughter, Cecelia.
Jimmy says, “for the last few years I’ve been swimming in an ocean of grief which has unlocked a resourcefulness in me that I had no idea existed. It’s out of this place that I have found a new sense of melody - a new voice. I’ve not had the urge to perform until recently and I’m extremely excited to share my new songs and begin the next chapter of my musical story.”
