The title of Jessica Carter Altman’s 2020 debut EP No Rules perfectly captured the emerging singer-songwriter’s bold, no-holds-barred approach to both her life and musical career. Most law school graduates who secure a position at a prestigious firm would lock in on that secure path and take it as far as ambitions and opportunities allow. The intense musical creativity she felt stirring inside her, however, compelled her to travel to Nashville where she connected with Grammy winning engineer/producer Jason Lehning. Lehning has worked with a multitude of great artists, including Randy Travis, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, Miranda Lambert, Erasure, and Guster, to name a few.

Jessica describes her first EP, a multi-generational covers project that included hip contemporary interpretations of classics by Duffy (“Warwick Avenue”), Classics IV (“Spooky”), The Kinks (“Sunny Afternoon”), Betty Who (“Missing You”) and alt rockers Elliot Root (“Wicked Lies”), as soft pop/rock. She is currently working with Lehning on an album project that she says is edgier than anything she’s done before.

In the meantime, the singer finds a graceful sweet spot between raw emotional power and intimate subtlety on her upcoming four track EP For You, an acoustic project featuring three beautiful and heartfelt original songs (and one remix) inspired by and dedicated to her father Robert A. Altman, a prominent D.C lawyer and businessman. Jessica released the lead single “Lucky One” in May, followed by “Cherry Blossoms” in July, a third single, the title track “For You” in August. The full EP, which will release in September, will also include a special remix. A unique lyric video accompanies each of the songs as well. She co-wrote all three tracks with Nashville songwriter Palmer Lee.

Jessica’s powerful, yet graceful artistry has landed her guest performances and features on The Talk, the TODAY Show and Forbes Magazine. Most recently, “Cherry Blossoms” was premiered by People Magazine (she was also featured as one of People’s “Ones To Watch”). “Lucky One” has been covered in the NY Post and was added to Entertainment Tonight’s “New Music Friday.” The song has also been featured in two Apple Playlists--“New In Singer Songwriter” and “Breaking Singer Songwriter”—as well as the “New Tunesmiths and Troubadours” playlist on Pandora.
