Matthew J Tow
Matthew J Tow is an Australian singer-songwriter emerging out of the late 80’s indie rock scene in Sydney, Australia. He has had an international career in music spanning more than 30 years and has been the front man and main songwriter of the bands Drop City and The Lovetones which both have had an indie following abroad and a legendary following at home in OZ.
Matt has also written songs for other bands including for The Brian Jonestown Massacre and has toured with the BJM where he performed his songs live with the band in 2003. He also released a series of albums under the name Colorsound between the years 1994 to 2004. These releases were distinctively more instrumental and experimental than any of his other releases appearing on Sonic Boom from Spacemen 3’s label ‘Space Age Recordings’. The first Colorsound album "You're Only As Good As You Sound" was released in the US through Sub Pop in 1994 earning a ‘jackpot revue’ in CMJ magazine.
As Rolling Stone wrote in 2002, ‘he should have probably been born a few decades earlier so he could have been a peer of Ray Davies, Lennon & McCartney and David Bowie hanging around Carnaby Street in the 1960's, because his songwriting is a strong reminder of that era. But also of the 90's and Britpop. He echoes the influences of generations but brings it together into a mix completely of his own’.
Matt has spent most of the past 3 decades touring as a musician. With Drop City throughout the 90’s performing consistently in Australia playing The Big Day Out Festival and supporting acts such as the Stone Roses, Stereolab, The Hoodoo Gurus, the Posies and Swervedriver to name a few. Then with The Lovetones throughout the 2000’s and early 2010’s touring extensively in the USA and Europe.
In 2012 The Hoodoo Gurus’ guitarist Brag Shepherd invited The Lovetones to reform and play their annual ‘Dig It Up’ festival in Sydney with other esteemed artists The Sonics, Redd Kross, Died Pretty and The Sunnyboys.
Now for the first time in almost 10 years Matthew returns to the USA and will be playing a one-off solo acoustic in New York at the famed ‘Rockwood Music Hall’ the is coming Wed 23rd April.
