Red lips and black eyeliner. A clementine thrown into your bag before a night out. Memories collaged together as photos on a bedroom wall. Pink hair dye staining the bathroom sink. Sipping a vodka coke in the corner while you watch everyone have fun. This is the world of 19-year-old New York based singer-songwriter Mia Tims.
Growing up in a suburban beach town, Mia dreamt of visiting new places and meeting new people, scheming how she would arrive at her next big adventure. Now in her second year at NYU Tisch’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, she is making these childhood fantasies a reality. Described as “bubblegum dreamrock,” Mia’s music submerges you in her world of melodrama and excitement. Her debut EP Psychosomatic serves as a time capsule of what it’s like to be young, in love with the world, and unsure of what you want. On her lead single “Live Forever,” we see Mia post-breakup, preoccupied and trying to make up for lost love. The lyrics ask a question that lies at the heart of Mia’s work: how can you be everything for everybody all at once? In pursuit of an answer Mia finds herself in a beautiful, lush whirlwind, creating her own soundtrack and enjoying the ride.
