The Lower Eastside Girls Club has been “Opening Doors, Empowering Women, and Building Community Girl by Girl” since 1996.

Today we operate a full-service arts, science and civic engagement Center for Community on Avenue D adjacent to the low-income NYCHA housing projects. We run programs that serve girls and young women throughout New York’s five boroughs, and collaborate with a range of National and Global partners. In 2020, we will be expanding with the opening of a Middle School for girls and a Community Health and Well-Being Center.

Shayfer James

Shayfer James weaves lyrically eloquent gothic landscapes that evoke the gauzy, sweaty sexuality of gulf-coast barrooms and the fantastical, narcotic mysticism of a Lewis Carroll-inspired three-ring circus. His piano driven music swaggers from dark danceable anthems to harrowing ballads with jazz lilted satire and whiskey-dirt grit. Inspired by horror films, Southern Gothic literature, Outlaw Country, Motown, and Golden Era composers,

Shayfer began recording music in 2008 and since then, he has released two full length albums, three EPs and various singles, as well as special projects and demos for his fans. He has toured and performed at festivals and events in the U.S. (Art Basel, CMJ), the UK, Iceland (SagaFest) and Hong Kong. Shayfer’s music has been featured by Filter Magazine, MTV Hive and as New & Noteworthy on iTunes. His original songs and musical scores have appeared in horror and suspense films which premiered at The Tribeca Film Festival 2017, SXSW 2018 and North Bend Film Festival 2018. In addition to writing, recording, performing and scoring for film, Shayfer is currently writing two musicals with collaborator Kate Douglas (Sleep No More, NYC) which have been developed in residence at Goodspeed Musicals, The O’Neill, and Rhinebeck Writers.

Shayfer recently completed production on his fourth EP, “Hope And A Hand Grenade,” set to be released on February 1st, 2019 via AWAL distribution (Kobalt Music).
