The Sentimentals

The Sentimentals (Gene Yellin, Phyllis Elkind, and Sam Dallas) bring heartful harmonies to a hot mix of bluegrass and country. They are thrilled to be joined by renowned mandolinist, Andy Statman.

Gene Yellin is a 40-year veteran of the New York bluegrass scene and considered one its best bluegrass singers. He currently plays with Andy Statman in Andy’s Ramble. Phyllis Elkind was the founder of Freddi & the Drumsticks, an all-female rock band, featured in stories on NBC and CBS. She has taught harmony at Jalopy music school for the last ten years. Sam Dallas is a Brooklyn-based bassist and vocalist. You can find her playing in bands that include Country City, Wifetime, and Paper Anniversary, along with many jams around town!

Andy Statman is one of his generation's most creative and influential mandolinists, having achieved legendary status for his unique melding of bluegrass, traditional Jewish music, and avant-garde jazz. "Bill Monroe and John Coltrane poured into one person. .. He plays all those just great crazy jazz kind of licks, but with the heart and fire of Bill Monroe ... I don't know anyone else that approaches the mandolin the way he does." -Ricky Skaggs, NPR.
